A New Cornering Experience in the SL
Mercedes-Benz will continue its long tradition of producing legendary sports cars when it launches the new-generation SL-Class in 2008. The successful roadster features a new design with the emphasis firmly on sportiness.
These traits are also reflected in the handling qualities of the two-seater model, which now delivers even more performance due to the new direct-steer system, which also offers enhanced comfort and safety. The new feature also utilizes a clever but simple technology to provide for a totally new cornering experience.
Speed-sensitive power steering with lower steering forces is also possible thanks to the innovative technology, which is based on the standard parameter. Parking and low-speed driving have become much easier as a result.
A new feature here is the variable rack ratio, which adjusts in line with the steering angle and increases sharply after five degrees. In other words, drivers don’t have to move the steering wheel as much when cornering as is the case with a constant-ratio-based steering system.
