EN01
Materials used by weight or volume
Not reported on, as it is not relevant for DaimlerChrysler. Providing a simple figure of mass makes little sense in the automotive industry, because unlike basic and raw materials industries, the automotive sector mainly processes complex elements which themselves consist of various types of raw material components.

Location and size of land owned, leased, managed in, or adjacent to, protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas
Not reported on, as it is not relevant for DaimlerChrysler. Internal environmental risk assessments conducted at DaimlerChrysler list all production facilities located in protected or environmentally endangered areas. At the moment, only the production plant in Rastatt, Germany is located near a nature reserve (as defined by EU Directive 92/43/EEC of May 21, 1992 on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora). Appropriate measures in this regard were decided upon during the planning stage for the production facility. The facility plan also set aside special areas at the location to accommodate rare and endangered species.
The associated measures received a positive review from independent external auditors ten years after the launch of production activities in Rastatt.

Emissions of ozone-depleting substances by weight
In accordance with the Montreal Protocol on Substances That Deplete the Ozone Layer, as well as various national regulations, the use of substances that damage the ozone layer is limited to that amount needed to maintain the operation of existing production equipment that require them. The particularly dangerous substances R11 and R12 have been replaced worldwide with less critical materials. No measurements are made of the quantity of ozone-depleting substances used for the operation of existing production equipment at international production locations.

Total environmental protection expenditures and investments by type
Total expenditure on environmental protection measures amounted to EUR 1.68 billion in 2006.
Production-related expenditure here totaled approximately EUR 512 million (2005: EUR 500 million).
Environmental protection investment in the area of product-related research and development increased by 2.6 % to EUR 1.168 billion in 2006.
DaimlerChrysler also made an additional environmental protection investment of approximately EUR 61 million in 2006. This amount remained unchanged from the prior year. The most extensive investment occurred at the Untertürkheim plant, where EUR 18 million was channeled into systems for air and water purification and waste disposal as part of construction of new production facilities.
The fact that environmental protection measures are largely integrated into production facilities and processes today makes it difficult to precisely calculate total investment in environmental protection. This is why the above figures, which are compiled to ensure compliance with legal requirements in Germany, for example, only offer limited insight into the overall effort the company makes to promote environmental protection.
