Engine Technology: DIESOTTO not only produces low emissions, it's also economical
A toolkit for low-exhaust combustion

DIESOTTO is not a special kind of engine but an engine concept consisting of several elements, including the use of a turbocharging system and four rather than six cylinders. The other engine block components are (left to right) gasoline direct injection, a variable valve train assembly, homogeneous charge combustion ignition and a variable crankshaft drive. The self-igniting gasoline engine is supported by a hybrid module and an innovative engine management system. Controlled auto ignition is initiated in the partial load state, where combustion occurs at lower temperatures than with sparkplug ignition. Thus less nitrogen oxide is formed than in a conventional SI engine. A three-way catalytic converter is therefore all it takes to meet the future EU 6 emission standard.
