Low-CO2 Natural Gas Drive in the B 170 NGT

You could be forgiven for thinking that NGT is short for “Next Great Thing,” but in fact the three letters on the back of the B-Class 170 NGT stand for “Natural Gas Technology.”
Starting in the summer of 2008, Mercedes-Benz will for the first time be offering a compact model equipped with an 85 kW/116 hp engine that can be operated either with gasoline or with natural gas — a dual-fuel engine.
The B170 NGT is the “little brother” of the E 200 NGT, which has been successfully on sale for more than three years as an alternative drive system for people who are both price-conscious and environmentally aware. In both of these NGT models, the CO2 emissions in natural gas operation are about 20 percent lower than with a comparable gasoline version. For example, the B 170 NGT consumes around 4.9 kilograms of natural gas per 100 kilometers — with CO2 emissions of just 135 grams per kilometer.
And many drivers will also be able to breathe a sigh of relief at the pump, as the lower price of compressed natural gas in many countries can halve a vehicle’s operating costs.
