A Coveted Yellow Angel: Actros
The Yellow Angel, which is awarded by the Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil Club (ADAC), is one of the most coveted automotive quality labels in Europe. This year the Active Brake Assist, which supports drivers during emergency stops, earned this prestigious seal. This assistant system is used in the Safety Truck version of the Mercedes-Benz Actros heavy-duty truck.
Based on the Telligent proximity sensor system, Active Brake Assist is designed to prevent rear-end collisions. Using continual proximity measurements and the speed relative to a preceding vehicle, the electronics can determine when a crash will occur unless the traffic situation changes or the driver intervenes. In such a case, the system goes into action. First it warns the driver both optically and acoustically of the impending danger.
If the driver doesn’t react, it actuates a 30 percent partial braking action to reduce the energy of the vehicle and to increase the intensity of the warning. Only if the driver still fails to react do the electronics trigger an emergency braking action. | ||||||
